Where the mighty Mekong River splits into nine dragon tails (Cuu Long) before spilling into the East Sea, the Mekong Delta is an enchanting aquatic world pulsing with life, agriculture, and centuries-old riverine traditions.

Dawn at Cai Rang Floating Market in Can Tho

At 5:30 AM, hundreds of wooden riverboats assemble on the Hau River laden with pineapples, watermelons, dragon fruit, and durians. Boat vendors hang samples of their produce from tall bamboo poles (cay beo) so buyers can spot them from afar.

"Slurping a steaming bowl of Hu Tieu noodle soup handed to you from a neighboring boat in the middle of a floating market at dawn is pure Vietnamese magic," writes food travel writer Linh Dan.

Delta Highlights

  • Tra Su Cajuput Mangrove Forest: Glide through a thick carpet of brilliant green water lettuce under the canopy of towering cajuput trees teeming with egrets and herons in An Giang.
  • Tropical Fruit Orchard Feasts: Pick ripe rambutan, mangosteen, and pomelo straight from the tree on Ben Tre and Cai Be river islands.
  • Coconut Candy & Honey Bee Farms: Watch traditional artisanal candy making using freshly grated river coconut milk and wood-fired woks.

Opt for a multi-day boutique river cruiser or a peaceful riverside eco-homestay along the tributaries to experience the authentic warmth of southern delta hospitality.
