[Photo Essay] Cho Ben Thanh After Dark: The Sights, Sizzling Woks & Night Stalls of District 1

There is no symbol more synonymous with the spirit of Ho Chi Minh City than Ben Thanh Market (Cho Ben Thanh). While daytime trading fills the historical 1914 halls, nighttime brings a whole new culinary and social spectacle to Phan Boi Chau and Phan Chu Trinh streets.

Flames, Fragrance and Midnight Energy

Under bright canopy lights, open-air seafood kitchens fire up high-pressure gas burners, tossing gigantic woks of butter-garlic mud crabs, grilled lemongrass clams, and crispy Vietnamese pancakes (Banh Xeo).

"Ben Thanh at night is the vibrant living room of Saigon, where locals, overseas Vietnamese, and international travelers share tiny plastic tables over ice-cold Saigon Special beer," says photographer Tran Quang.
