Its colossal main passage is so massive that a 40-story skyscraper could stand upright inside without touching the ceiling.
A Lost World Beneath the Jungle
First explored by the British Cave Research Association in 2009, Son Doong feels like an alien planet. Natural collapses in the ceiling—known as dolines—allow sunlight to penetrate deep into the cavern, creating lush underground jungles nicknamed the "Garden of Edam" where monkeys and hornbills thrive.
"You do not merely visit Son Doong; you embark on a multi-day odyssey into the primordial core of our planet," explains chief expedition leader Howard Limbert.
The 4-Day Trekking Itinerary
- Day 1 - Jungle Infiltration: Trek through Rao Thuong River valleys, crossing pristine rivers to reach Hang En, the world's third-largest cave.
- Day 2 - Descending into Son Doong: Rappel 80 meters down sheer limestone walls into the dark abyss using specialized speleology ropes and harnesses.
- Day 3 - The Great Wall of Vietnam: Ascend the 90-meter-high calcite barrier using technical climbing gear and ladders.
- Day 4 - Emergence: Jungle trek back through the jungle canopy to celebratory feast in Phong Nha town.
Due to strict environmental protections, only 1,000 permits are issued per year exclusively through licensed operator Oxalis Adventure, making it one of the most coveted trekking experiences on Earth.
